October 2005 DEVASTATION
As many of you know, and some
have seen and experienced first-hand, there has been a tremendous amount
of suffering and destruction as a result of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita
and now Wilma.
But the U.S. is not the only ones being affected. As a result of Hurricane Stan, over 2000 Guatemalans have lost their lives and many tens of thousands more have lost their homes, their lands and their possessions. The town of Panabaj was completely buried by a landslide and the officials of the town have now requested that it be declared a permanent burial site. Fortunately for those of us here in the capital, we only received steady rain for several days. However, as a young church, the people here wanted to get involved and we were able to do so in a variety of ways. Several of the men of the Mission are in the military and were almost immediately deployed to strategic areas to help with organization and distribution efforts through the southern coast and even in the mountains.
Those of us who remained
behind also wanted to help, but because of tremendous misuse of funds
and outright stealing, we were very cautious.
The Lord opened doors to allow us to be a part of an effort to help over 400 families that had been displaced from the coast to one of the highest and coldest areas of the country called Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán. No one was helping them! We prepared bags of non-perishable food, including in each bag several tracks, a Gospel of John/Romans and a leaflet letting those folks know that there were a group of Baptist Christians praying specifically for them. ENLISTING IN THE LORD’S ARMY!
Although it wasn’t our initial
game plan, the Mission is slowly becoming a military outpost for the
Lord’s Army! The area of town where Truth Baptist Mission is located is a military subdivision and near the main Guatemalan military base. As a result, we have several military officers attending the Mission. Two weeks ago Lieutenant Colonel Jorge Obregón and his wife Idalmi trusted Christ as their Savior on a Tuesday evening in our home. This last Sunday morning General Jorge Flores, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Guatemala, committed his life to Jesus Christ. Bro. Flores gave a wonderful testimony of his desire to use the rest of his life make his life count for something that is eternal because of his love for the Lord. Amen! Another lady for whom we have been praying, Alma López, trusted Jesus as her Savior as well. We praise the Lord for His working in lives and we thank each of you who have a special part in our ministry through your faithful prayers and financial support. May the Lord bless you all richly!
